1972 PC Mile Relay

Putnam City has had three track and field relay teams break state records while also winning state championships.  The 1972 mile relay team was the first.  The team of Jeff Dethrow, Alan Yates, Jim Hardin and Joey Hammond covered the distance in 3:16.0 at the State Meet, breaking the state record in the process.  They defeated runner-up Muskogee by 1.6 seconds to take the gold.  Since Oklahoma moved to the metric system in track distances in 1983, this record was technically never broken.  The team was led by head coach Kenneth Keel and event coach Gene Firth.
